Family Portraits

Sarah Peterson, Peterson Creative Photography & Design

Welcome!

Whether you’re gathering generations together or simply wanting to capture your family as it is right now, your session is designed with care and intention. I specialize in working with families of all sizes, including large, multi-generation and reunion-style groups, and I understand how meaningful these moments are.

From our first conversation through the final artwork, my commitment is to an exceptional experience and beautifully finished products—portraits that feel natural, authentic, and worthy of being passed down for years to come.

Every family is different, and questions are always welcome. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about family portrait sessions.

Family Portrait FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions from families.

Where will our family session take place?

That’s something we’ll decide together. Family sessions can take place in my fully equipped indoor studio, outdoors at a meaningful location, or a combination of both. For larger families or reunions, outdoor locations are often a great fit. Every session includes planning time so we can choose a location that works well for your group and reflects your family’s style.

What if we have a large group or extended family?

You’re in the right place. I regularly photograph large families and reunion-style groups, including multi-generation families. During planning, we’ll talk through group size, combinations, and timing to make sure everyone is included and the session runs smoothly.

How much should we expect to invest?

Investment varies depending on the size of your family and what you choose to purchase. Some clients spend around $500, while others invest $5000 or more in finished artwork, with most landing somewhere in between. There are no minimum purchase requirements—you only purchase what you love.

A non-refundable session fee is due at the time of booking to reserve your date and time. Family session fees range from $95–$245 based on group size and include all pre-planning, preparation, and photography time. Products are purchased separately after your session.

What should we wear for our family session?

I help with that! During your planning consultation, we’ll talk through colors, coordination, and styles that photograph beautifully without being overly “matchy.” I’m happy to help you choose outfits that feel comfortable, cohesive, and timeless—and that still allow everyone’s personality to shine.

What if my kids don’t cooperate?

This is one of the most common worries—and completely understandable. My approach is relaxed and flexible, allowing kids to be kids. I work quickly, keep things moving, and follow their lead when needed. Some of the most meaningful images come from moments in between, and patience is always built into family sessions.

Can we include grandparents, pets, or extended family?

Yes! Grandparents and extended family members are welcome, and pets can often be included as well. Just let me know ahead of time so we can plan the session and location appropriately.

How long will our session last?

Session length depends on your group size and what you’d like to include. Most family sessions last between one and two hours. For larger groups or multiple family units, additional time may be recommended to keep the experience relaxed and enjoyable.

What happens if the weather doesn’t cooperate?

Weather is always part of the planning conversation—especially for larger family and reunion groups who are only in town for a limited time. For these sessions, we plan ahead with backup options, including covered or alternative locations, so we can still create beautiful images even if the forecast changes. If weather conditions truly make a session impossible, rescheduling is an option when availability allows. This is most common for smaller family groups with more flexibility. No matter the situation, my goal is to be prepared, communicate clearly, and help ensure your session goes smoothly rain or shine.

Do you retouch family photos?

Yes. All ordered images are fully retouched, including natural skin smoothing, removal of temporary marks or distractions, and overall polish—while keeping everyone looking like themselves.

When will we see our images?

Your images will be ready to go through about 2–3 weeks after your session. We’ll meet in the studio or via Zoom to view your full gallery, select your favorites, and start designing finished artwork and collections for your home. For a more information on my process please see the What to Expect page.

Do you offer digital images?

Yes—with intention. My focus is on creating printed artwork your family can enjoy every day. With any image order, matching low-resolution, watermarked files are included for easy social media sharing. High-resolution digital files are complimentary with artwork sized 16×20 or larger or with a Legacy Album. Additional digital collections are available for purchase.

What products are most popular for families?

Wall art, collections of framed or canvas group portraits, albums, and gift prints are favorites. During your ordering appointment, I’ll help you select artwork that fits your home and your family’s needs.

What makes your family sessions different?

Family sessions are about connection, not perfection. I focus on creating a relaxed experience that allows genuine interactions and meaningful moments to unfold—resulting in images that feel natural, timeless, and true to your family. I also have a passion for things that last and it is my hope that you will enjoy these portraits for years to come.

What My Clients Say

My very large family hired Sarah to take some family portraits to celebrate my mother's 90th birthday. We are a very large group, and each individual family wanted their own portraits as well.

Sarah is a wonderful, creative and positive person. She made each of us feel at ease, and worked with the entire family, age 2 years to 90 years. The photo shoot itself was easy, relaxing, and fun. We added our own ideas for some family groupings and Sarah was very easy to work with.

The best part, however, is the art she creates from the photographs. Stunningly beautiful. Black and white, edits, enhancements, natural settings and creative attention to detail -- the gallery we worked with following the photo shoot was rich with options. Sarah is open to input, she mocked up lots and lots of different collages and incorporated our many ideas following the review. Today, many of us have lovely portraits decorating the walls of our homes -- a reminder of a wonderful family reunion and art for our homes for the rest of our lives.

I highly recommend Peterson Creative Photography & Design!
